Each year as part of the internationally observed Nuclear Science Week, U.S. WIN honors one of their chapters as the “Most Reactive.” Chapter submissions are evaluated based on member participation, number of activities held, nuclear science topics covered, variety in public sections reached and overall number of individuals interfaced with.
This year, our Entergy chapter pulled out all the stops and came in with an outstanding submission to win Most Reactive Chapter. They were involved with numerous STEM activities including science fairs, Nuclear Science Days and reaching out to legislators to advocate for nuclear. Their endeavors reached almost 2000 individuals including K-12 and college students, industry, elected officials, and members of the general public. U.S. WIN members from each of Entergy’s four nuclear power plants (Grand Gulf, Arkansas Nuclear One, River Bend and Waterford) and from their headquarters in Jackson, MS, participated in this year’s outreach efforts. They covered topics including what atoms consist of, fission, radiation protection shielding, how a nuclear reactor works, electricity generation, a discussion on half-lives and robotics. They also held a membership drive and an outreach to administrative personnel on the power of leadership and influence on women and how to advance your career in the nuclear industry.
“We are thankful for all our chapters’ hard work and amazing outreach during the 2022 National Nuclear Science Week. Through their efforts advocating for and championing nuclear energy, thousands of people experienced various nuclear science topics. It is through this kind of outreach that we will help promote policies that support nuclear as a carbon-free energy source,” said Jennifer Watkins, Nuclear Science Week lead for the U.S. WIN communications committee.
Tamara May, Entergy Nuclear senior project control specialist and fleet president of Entergy’s U.S. WIN chapter said, “Earning this recognition took a team effort, everyone pulling in the same direction towards excellence.”
The U.S. WIN Communications Committee would like to thank all our chapters for your hard work and amazing outreach during the 2022 National Nuclear Science Week! Through your efforts, over 3500 individuals experienced various nuclear science topics via discussions, presentations, virtual platforms and on-campus outreach booths. The events focused on reaching students of all ages. We had six entries this year: DC WIN, Duke Energy, Entergy, University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign, University of Michigan, and Southern Nuclear.
