On Saturday, Dec. 1, 50 Girl Scouts and 20 Scout Leaders attended a Get to Know Nuclear Day at PG&E’s Energy Education Center in Avila Beach, CA. The event was coordinated and hosted by the Diablo Canyon Chapter of U.S. Women in Nuclear (WIN). The five-hour session was packed with hands-on activities that ranged from Half-Life demonstrations to dressing up for a broad range of nuclear careers in which the scouts donned lab coats, protective clothing and business suits.
The first of its kind event received rave reviews from both scouts and presenters. “It has been such an honor to participate in this exciting workshop. U.S. WIN and Girl Scouts make a perfect pair and this event really captures U.S. WIN’s mission to educate on nuclear technologies. The energy and spirit of these young people is infectious!” said Corie Colbourn, Senior Advising Procurement Technical Specialist, and lead coordinator for the event.
The Diablo Canyon Chapter of U.S. WIN recognizes Corie for her efforts in organizing and coordinating the event. They also recognize members Monica Barnby, Stephanie Barnes, Tammy Cutts, Heather Matteson, Shilo Terek, Meagan Wilson, and station employees Chris Beard, Mario Burton, and Anderson Lin, for leading activity stations during the event. The chapter intends to make this workshop an annual event.
